Etymology

There are several interpretations for the name of this village — one stems from the Aramaic word gazze, meaning “treasures” or “savings,” and another stems from the word gezze, referring to the wool shaved from the sheep.

Location

The municipality of Ghazzeh is located in the Kaza of West-Bekaa one of is one of the eight mohafazats (governorates) of Lebanon. Ghazzeh is 62 kilometers (38.5268 mi) away from Beyrouth (Beirut) the capital of Lebanon. It's elevations is of 870 meters (2854.47 ft - 951.432 yd) above sea level. Ghazzeh surface stretches for 760 hectares (7.6 km² - 2.9336 mi²) .

Population, voters, local authorities and skills

The population of Ghazze is estimated to be 6,150 people, with the majority of the population belonging to the Sunni sect. Ghazze is characterized by a high percentage of its residents living outside Lebanon (60%), mostly in Venezuela and Brazil. There are 1,000 houses in the village.

The largest families (according to number of registered voters) include:

- Al-Majdoub: 896 voters
- Al-Qadery: 358 voters
- Al-Smeili: 422 voters
- Abu-joukh: 189 voters
- Al-Ghazzawi: 302 voters
- Murad: 623 voters
- Dahook: 133 voters

Among the other families in Ghazzeh are:

Mansour, Ragab, Abu Naseef, Yasin, Khalil, Hazimeh, Abu Murad, Taha, Ayach, Aabd al-Fattah, Zahran, Sharaneq.

The village of Ghazze boasts three mayors, a mayoral council comprised of three members, and a municipal council comprised of fifteen members. Table No. 1 shows the revenue that the municipality received between 2000 and 2003 from the independent municipal council.

There is a large number of small shops in the village which provide for the needs of the village itself as well as for the needs of nearby villages. In addition, there are three sawmills and eight blacksmiths. There is an agricultural cooperative in Ghazzeh that assists farmers. Capital inflow from emigrants who have left the village to live abroad also assists many families.

Problems

This village of Ghazze is similar to villages throughout the surrounding area in that it suffers from neglect, which has prompted a large number of its citizens to emigrate. The village suffers from a lack of basic services. For example, there are no means in Ghazze by which its residents may dispose of solid waste, which forces the people to collect and burn their garbage, causing great discomfort and pollution and inviting the spread of diseases to the population.
