Etymology

There are several possible origins for the name :

- A name combined from 2 parts: First part means a fenced pen for cattle or a house and the second part is the root word for “deprived” which means prohibition and then sanctification.
- A holy place (in Aramaic or Phoenician)
- A house prepared for ladies (Arabic) [5]

Location

The municipality of Haouch El Harimeh is located in the Kaza of West-Bekaa one of is one of the eight mohafazats (governorates) of Lebanon. Haouch El Harimeh is 55 kilometers (34.177 mi) away from Beyrouth (Beirut) the capital of Lebanon. It's elevations is of 860 meters (2821.66 ft - 940.496 yd) above sea level. Haouch El Harimeh surface stretches for 566 hectares (5.66 km² - 2.18476 mi²) .

Population, voters, local authorities and skills

There are an estimated 2,658 registered residents, mainly Sunni, living in 550 houses.

In 2000, the number of registered voters was 1,704, 969 of whom cast their ballots. In 2005, the number of registered voters increased to 1,986, and out of those 1,279 voted. In 2009, the number reached 2,232, and 1,582 cast their ballots. They belong to the following families:

There is a municipal council currently headed by Ahmad Mohamad Al-Ahmad and consists of 12 members. There are also 2 mukhtars, Ahmad Kassem Ayoub and Mariam Hussein Adwi, and a three-member ikhtiyariah body. [5]

The town has one public school with 384 students registered in the 2005-2006 academic year, compared to 370 registered the following year. The school also has 22 staff members, 19 of whom are contracted. The town has Al-Qadrieh Public Primary school that had 200 students in the 2006-2007 academic year with 17 staff members, 16 of whom are contracted. [5]

The town’s main source of income is agriculture, especially the cultivation of wheat, potatoes and other kinds of vegetables. [5]
